As an undergraduate at the University of Iowa, he graduated with honors in Exercise Science.
He later graduated from the University of Iowa with a doctorate degree in dental surgery.
While in dental school, Dr. Cowherd was awarded student of the year for Special Care and Geriatric Dentistry.
Since then, he has had a wide range of experiences, including in community health, private practice and teaching at the University of Iowa.
