Full and Partial Dentures
Report
A denture is a removable dental appliance replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissue.
They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and can often enhance your smile.
There are two types of dentures - complete and partial dentures.
Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.
A Partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it can also prevent other teeth from shifting.
A Complete denture may be either "conventional" or "immediate."
Implant-Supported Dentures
Report
An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants to provide a more secure fit.
A regular denture rests on the gums, and is not supported by implants.
An implant-supported denture is used when a person doesn't have any remaining teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants.
Implant-supported dentures are most often made for the lower jaw as conventional dentures tend to be less stable there.
Usually, a complete upper denture is quite secure on its own and doesn't require the extra stability offered by implants.
Extractions
Report
Impacted teeth and wisdom teeth that can potentially cause problems, like infections, need to be removed.
Extractions can range from a single tooth, to removing all four wisdom teeth at once.
Based on the preference of the doctor and/or the patient, a local anesthetic could be used to numb the areas where the teeth will be extracted.
Others will prefer to go under a general anesthetic so that they will be sedated during the procedure.
The gum tissue around the wisdom tooth is cut open to reveal the tooth.
Relines
Report
Relining your dentures is a procedure that re-fits the surface of your denture to the tissues in your mouth.
Having your dentures relined will most often make your dentures comfortable again and give more stability.
Relines are required for a variety of different reasons.
The most common being shrinking of the oral tissues or gum resorption.
This is caused by the normal aging process or can also be caused by the extraction of your natural teeth.
As a general rule, your dentures should be relined every 2-3 years.
